Classical Chinese Medicine Mentorship

Studying Classical Chinese Medicine with a mentor is an essential element in learning the intricate nature of this ancient healing tradition. Chinese Medicine has been passed down through the millennia with this style of teaching and observation of your mentor in clinic. A mentor can take you beyond textbook knowledge and deepen your understanding of formula presentations, patient constitutions, physiological mechanisms, and the application of Chinese herbal formulas in clinical situations. Mentorship provides insights into the subtle intricacies of formula differentiation and diagnostic techniques such as pulse taking, abdominal palpation, and questioning, to guide students in developing the observational skills essential for accurate diagnosis and effective herbal treatment. Studying with a mentor develops your connection to the lineage (Lóngshā Xuépài 龙砂学派), instilling a respect for its history and physicians who have preserved this knowledge for generations.

A mentor is someone who has spent years studying closely with their own mentor, and through years of their own practice has honed the techniques and knowledge necessary to effectively apply Chinese herbal formulas in the clinic. Dr. Eran Even, Ph.D., Dr.TCM has spent years in clinic studying with Professor Huáng Huáng 黄煌 of the International Jingfang Institute of the Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine. After years of Dr. Even mentoring his own students with online classes, discussions, and in-person herbal observation clinics, the decision was made to fill the void of mentorship in Classical Chinese Herbal Medicine studies by creating an online platform for students near and far to benefit from this style of learning. Dr. Even’s goals with this Jingfang Mentorship and Community is to deepen the students’ abilities to engage with the Chinese Medicine Classics, to learn to apply the formula families as taught by Professor Huáng Huáng 黄煌 into their clinical practices, and to be confident Jingfang practitioners. His philosophy is summed up in this quote: “Mengzi warns us against the dangers of uncritically accepting the classics. We have to interpret texts contextually and creatively, rather than rigidly and literally.”

The Lineage

Lóngshā Xuépài 龙砂学派

Lóngshā 龙砂 medicine originated from the Longshan and Shanshen areas in Jiangyin. The foundation was laid out by Liu Wengui, a famous scholar in the Yuan dynasty, and developed in the surrounding areas through doctors in the Ming and Qing dynasties, forming an academic school with great influence in southern Jiangsu. This school of medicine stretches for hundreds of years, with many influential doctors. These doctors were adept at using the Five Movements (wu yin) and Six Qi (liu qi) theory from the Huángdì Nèijīng 黃帝內經. They made used of the Shānghán Zábìng Lùn 傷寒雜病論 formulas with the 'formula, herb, person' model, and the Six Conformations.
